VEDIC RULES FOR NAMAKARANAM / NAMING YOUR NEW BORN

VEDIC RULES FOR NAMAKARANAM

Your baby’s name is up to you. However, believers of Hindu dharma rely on Vedic astrology to arrive at the name of their child. Naming the child based on his/her birth star is believed to add value, luck and blessings to the child and pave way for a prosperous and blemish-free future for the child. That is why, certain rules are followed in naming a new born according to the Hindu dharma.

Astrology holds that each birth star draws strength from the phonetics associated with certain alphabets or vowels. The alphabets and phonetic sound they produce give strength to the person born under that star. This also means that every birth star will have a different set of auspicious letters assigned to it. There are five general principles determining what the initial letter of a child's name should be. They are:

  • 1. Janam Nakshatranam (by lunar asterism, composed of the birth star of the child, the position of planets at the time and date of birth and, the moon sign)
  • 2. Masa nams (month of birth)
  • 3. Devata nama (the family deity)
  • 4. Rashi nama (the child's Zodiac sign) and,
  • 5. Samsarika nama (the worldly name).

Traditionally it is advised that boys’ names have letters in even numbers and girls’ names be composed of odd-numbered letters. However, 11 is considered the most auspicious length for both genders. Usually your astrologer will give you the alphabets or phonetic sounds ideal to be the first letter of your new born’s first name. We have put together a chart of birth stars and their corresponding alphabets to name your baby based on Vedic astrology, to help you craft an auspicious name for your child.
